Students will be taught the SQ3RC note taking method and study strategy. The acronym stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review, and Connect. Through each stage of the strategy, students are interacting with the text in different ways. In the survey and question stages, they are able to set a purpose for reading. My relevant training and experience for this course: My Credentials: ~Bachelor of Arts: English ~Master of Arts in Education: Curriculum and Instruction, Reading Specialist Certification ~Licensed English/Language Arts teacher in New Jersey ~Taught Language Arts and English in middle and high school, respectively; taught reading classes ~Incorporated study skills and reading strategies in classes at all levels ~Created a reading program for special needs high school students with learning difficulties ~Over 20 years as an educator serving various learning communities as a licensed English and reading teacher, special education teacher for students with learning difficulties, adjunct professor with James Madison University (VA) teaching science literacy, and Curriculum Specialist for a high school in NC providing curriculum assistance and training for teachers in all subjects. ~In the private sector, I created a tutoring service where I provided in-home tutoring for students who needed supplemental reading assistance, homework organization, and study skills strategies. ~I co-created an evening tutoring club with other teachers within my church community. SQ3RC handout will be provided. Reading text will be provided.
The material will be presented to the class by a Google Slideshow which will be screen-shared from the teacher's device only. Students will need to access the class handouts through the Outschool classroom page before class. No external links will be clicked, no websites will be visited, and no logins will be necessary for learners.
