課堂經歷
In this camp, we'll work on learning tactical strategies used in chess games. We will focus on identifying common themes, pattern recognition, and execution through practice. Learners will learn both sides of each tactic and gain board awareness to avoid common mistakes. We will begin each class with a variety of puzzles so that students can explore and gain knowledge of the tactic organically. Then, we will have a short lesson that covers terminology, core ideas, execution, and tips for the defending player. After this lesson, we will complete additional puzzles to solidify that knowledge and ensure understanding before having the opportunity to use our skills during a game of chess. Chess is also a proven strategy for increasing math and executive functioning skills for all learners including those with ADHD or autistic students. Additionally, the group atmosphere allows students to practice social skills like turn-taking and collaboration and life skills like conflict mediation and handling disagreements. Day 1: Two is Better Than One: Forks and Double Attacks. We will learn how to find moves that attack more than one piece on the board. We will discover that this is where knights and pawns gain their strength and how to utilize "lines" on the board to exhibit control. Students will practice identifying and avoiding potential forks when playing with the defending pieces. Day 2: All About Lines: Pins and Skewers. Students will learn how to use positional advantage through pins and skewers. Students will continue using their line awareness to take advantage of positions. Day 3: Decoys and Deflection: Students will learn about deflection or attacking the defender and decoy sacrifices to use tactics in complex positions. Students will practice threat identification by responding to decoys and work on solidifying positions to remove solitary defenders when working with the defending pieces. Day 4: Begin to Win: Students will learn common opening traps. They will develop a backup plan for these attacks and learn how to avoid them when playing with the defending pieces. Before joining this course: Students should know the piece names and understand the chess board. Students should know the rules of chess. Students should be able to play a chess game from start to finish. Students should have a basic understanding of chess strategy and play to capture pieces and check the king.
