每週 1-2 小時. Each week, the challenge will be started in class and students will complete their designs on their own, ready to present to their peers. Cooperative grouping for brainstorming and research will take place in class, while the actual challenge solution will be independent. Approximately 2 hours outside class, depending on the challenge.評估

In this class, students will explore different branches of engineering as they learn about and design their own solutions to problems happening around the world now. These real time issues are in the forefront of current events, and require innovative solutions. Students will be encouraged to be creative and independent as they learn the Engineering Design Process to tackle these challenges and present their solutions to their classmates. Each week will feature a different problem that we will research and investigate in class, brainstorm possible solutions, and share ideas. At the end of class, students will take what they have learned to design and test their own solution, video or take pictures of it, and be ready to share with the class the following week. Along the way they will learn about engineering practices, how engineers find failure points and redesign, and 6 different branches of engineering. Week 1: Drought in Chad - This small landlocked country in Africa is in crises due to climate change and over use of water resources. Lake Chad is rapidly disappearing, creating a humanitarian crises. Can you design an airdrop system that can get supplies into affected areas without damaging them? Week 2: Avalanche! - Each year, avalanches occur around the world in the winter and spring. Sometimes these events trap skiers and mountain climbers, and sometimes they cause damage to the cities at the bottom of the mountain. Changes in the world’s climate have caused an increase in the number of avalanches in recent years. Your city, located at the base of the Big Snowy Mountains in Montana is planning to build barriers to protect the homes and citizens from avalanches and have asked your firm to submit a proposal. Can you design avalanche barriers above the city to protect them from avalanche destruction? Week 3:Earthquake! - Earthquakes can be unpredictable, even with the tools seismologists have, and can cause major destruction and loss of life. They happen all over the world, and in recent years many countries have experience significant loss of life from collapsing buildings. Your architectural engineering company has been asked by the city of San Francisco to submit a proposal for the new City Hall building in downtown San Francisco. Since San Francisco experiences significant earthquake events, they are looking for the structure that will withstand earthquakes to the best possible extent. Your challenge is to design a building that will still stand after being tested on an earthquake shake table. Week 4: Blow Wind Blow - More and more, cities are turning to alternative sources of renewable energy in order to reduce consumption of fossil fuels. One renewable energy source is wind energy, produced on large wind farms from wind turbines. The problem is that these turbines are ugly and noisy, and most people don't want to live close to one. The mayor of a major city wants to install wind-turbines that can withstand high winds and are also works of art. Your mission is to design an artistic kinetic wind sculpture prototype that is at least 12 inches tall and can withstand strong winds. Week 5: Clean Water for Everyone - Water pollution is a huge problem all over the world. Our oceans are filling up with plastics and other trash, rivers and streams are taking run-off filled with pesticides from farms, and other industries sometime allow waste material to flow into fresh water resources. In this challenge you will design a water filtration system that will clean water that is polluted with various types of trash, using materials you have available at home. Week 6: Get That Thing Out of Here! - Many ecosystems are being damaged by the introduction of species that are not native to the area. Recently, the Cuban Tree Frog has been spotted in some areas of Florida. They compete with native species for food and can be a nuisance for people. The Florida Wildlife Preservation Society has asked your firm to create a way to trap and remove these frogs without harm so they can be relocated to their native habitat.
學習目標
By the end of this course, students will have a deep understanding of the Engineering Design Process. They will be challenged to think critically to solve these problems, communicate and brainstorm with classmates, and understand that failure is an important part of the design process.

All lessons will be presented through NearPod
Research will be done with pre-screened websites and videos, posted on Symbaloo (customized safe search with a private link, only available to class members) posted by the teacher and shown in class.
Symbaloo is a platform that allows the teacher to pre-screen and select the sites that students will use for research. Clicking on the link the teacher has loaded will take the student off platform to a site that has been vetted by the teacher for accuracy and safety. Students will not require accounts or logins for anything that is linked from Symbaloo.
None of these resources require student logins or accounts.
供應清單
A complete supply list will be posted two weeks before class begins, but all materials are things typically around home, recyclables, and a variety of art materials. A complete list of materials may be found at - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ObEQTmBpkq1xK7FSSXZAZ5Wzx-8jn7DN/view?usp=sharing

I have been sharing my love of science and math with elementary students in public schools for over 26 years. I served most of that time in the classroom and then moved into Instructional Coaching to help other teachers improve their practice in those areas. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
Science classes with Ms. Susan are fun, engaging, and hands on, with an inquiry approach in everything we do. My goal is to latch on to the natural curiosity children have about the world around them and use that to explore science and math concepts in a rich and meaningful way. I believe in teaching in ways that children learn, using strategies and activities that foster a love of learning. As a retired teacher, I am not bound by district or state policies and I am able to use fun, creative lessons to instill the academics that children need to master, not the ones they need to pass state assessments.
One of my favorite quotes from Carl Sagan sums up my approach to science education - "Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." In Ms. Susan's Super Science and Math classes, students will be challenged to think!
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy nurturing butterflies in the garden and baking with my grandchil
