No preparation is required for most of my outschool classes, but I recommend reading Stealing Freedom by Elisa Carbone. If the student doesn't have time to do that, I have placed some overview materials in the classroom so students can spend a few minutes getting a general idea about the topic.等級

Did you know that Underground Railroad was not underground and was not a railroad? "Railroad" is a metaphor for network of people like Harriet Tubman who helped slaves to escape from the South to freedom in the North and Canada in the early to mid-1800s. Come on board with me and learn in two meetings about the 1) The Underground Railroad Network, and 2) Ann Maria Weem's escape from Maryland to Canada in the 1850s. This course is based on the book, Stealing Freedom, by Elisa Carbone, about Ms. Weems (See below for more information about the book). This book is historical fiction that borrows from the real life of Ann Maria Weems. Racial prejudice and the injustice of slavery are themes presented in the book, though the book is written for a young adult audience. We will meet up for two lessons, student discussion, and fun Kahoot quizzes about the material we have learned. It's best for the student to read the book or do some of their own research to bring more knowledge to class, but it's okay to come to class with no information ahead of time too. My teaching is question and answer so that my classes don't become a dull lecture. Student engagement is the goal, and also continued learning beyond my class. I will share some resources and links that will take students to the next level of knowledge.
學習目標
The first lesson will present an overview of the Underground Railroad, key players in involved, such as Conductors and Abolitionists (people against slavery). We will learn where it was, who was involved with it, and what can still be found today in museums and monuments.
The second lesson will focus on Stealing Freedom to provide a story about a young woman led to freedom by the Underground Railroad Network.
After each lesson students can participate in a Kahoot quiz of about ten questions.

父母的引導和規範
Stealing Freedom is written to a youth audience. There are some racist remarks from the slaveholders in the books, but it would be rated no more than PG 13 if it were a movie, and probably PG.

As a master's degree holder from Pepperdine University (2010) I have been a Graduate Teaching Assistant, College Instructor, and Summer Instructor to high school students at UCLA. I have also taught about 70 high school and middle school students on Outschool.
U.S. History includes violence and genocide against Native peoples, slavery of African Americans, and other examples of systemic racism. The existence of these difficult subjects would be encountered by the time a student finishes middle school--the target age for this class. When these topics are covered, sensitivity will be exercised, and I avoid gratuitous violence or sexual themes.
