每週 1-2 小時. Speed Reading is a skill that requires practice. Students who do best commit to practicing speed reading 10- 15/minute a day during this course and after this course for the following 30 days minimum and up to 3-4 months to "cement" this skill in their reading habits and increase their speed with the long-term goal of up to 1000wpm for certain types of reading.
評估
They will be assessed by timing their reading at the beginning and end of each class session. They will be informally assessed on comprehension. Parents will receive a written report detailing their progress.

課堂經歷

英語程度 - 未知
美國 8 - 11 年級
Students will learn how to speed read and improve their reading speed and comprehension skills in one week. The average reader is around 150-250 Words Per Minute. The goal is to increase by 20%-30% during the week of practice. After a month of daily practice, students should begin to see their normal reading speed increase to 400-600 wpm, and then with practice over 3-6 months, ideally even up to speeds of 1000 wpm. (Only 1% of readers read at 450 wpm or faster).

During this week, students will learn the key skills they need to learn to speed read, as well as ways to understand and remember better what they read. I work to help them become much more aware of what is happening in their brain. When do they understand what they've read and when don't they? It's imperative they commit to practice these skills for 1-3 months after to really see the full effect of reaching 600 wpm or more.

Please know I'm primarily teaching the skills that normally a "brick and mortar" school would teach and practice for a month. However, these past 3 months of offering this 5-day class prove the skills can be taught - and learned - in 5 days. Please PLEASE encourage your student to practice 10 minutes a day for a full month after taking my class so they experience the full effect of the class.

Parent and Student Expectations (Written on July 27, 2020)
Here is an idea of what you can expect: after teaching 4 weeks of classes and a total of 29 students so far, here are the stats of what has happened: Not including the student that missed 3 sessions and saw no increase in their reading speed, the range of increase after 5 days of class with me was from 13% speeding read increase (from a Monday to a Friday) to a high of 300% increase from a Monday to a Friday. The highest reading rate achieved was 1200 wpm. The average rate of increase was 72%. Results like these are not guaranteed. However, a modest increase of 30% in reading speed means they have just decreased the amount of time they need to read a school-assigned book by 1/3rd. Help your students see the value so they put in the work to gain a skill that will stay with them for life!!!

Parent and Student Expectations (Written on August 24, 2020)
32 students during August 1 - August 22, 2020. Average % increase: 133%, ranging from 14% - 355% increase. Students improved for example from 187 wpm to 693. Even a recent review by a parent who said their student hated the class - that student went from 220 wpm to 624 wpm. So the skills work when the student implements them and practices them. This is a skills-based class and it's super helpful if the parent can help ensure the student is implementing the way I'm teaching, since often I cannot see how the students are doing it and I let students have their video off during timed drills if they prefer.

Parent and Student Expectations (September 26, 2020)
31 students August 24 - September 25. Average increase: ranging from 0% to 685%, with an average increase of 130%. The person who had 0% increase only attended class on Monday and Friday, and it's possible that student did not practice or implement the skills.

NO DIGITAL BOOKS.
NO CARTOON BOOKS.

Speed reading skills will be explained, demonstrated, and then students given time to practice in class, ask questions, and receive feedback during class time. They will be timed approximately 4 times during the week to show student their progress almost immediately! For students who subvocalize (speak while they read), it takes time to break the habit but if necessary, they will be equipped with additional tips to help them work on learning to read without subvocalizing.

Parents, please know that students should be comfortably reading chapter books before taking this course.

學習目標
Students will improve their reading speed and comprehension by at least 20-30% above their starting base rate. (Often students will begin around 200wpm, and increase to 400wpm, 600 wpm, or more). Many will read much, much faster than that. They will learn when to use this skill and when to read at a slower pace. They will maintain high levels of comprehension (75% or better) as they increase their reading speed.

I've been teaching online for four years and LOVE it and the fact that through technology, I can help students get excited about reading and studyingI have a Doctorate of Religious Studies (DRS), a Master in Educational Leadership (MEd), a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Life Science, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology, and a 120-hr TESOL certificate from International Open University.

I've been teaching students for much of the past 30 years, and Outschool is just one more format where I get to interact with students on subjects I'm passionate about with students interested in them! My interests include reading and working in my flower garden and making homemade chocolate chip cookies!
