Looking for a fun, social class where you can make new friends and hang out? Well, you have found the right place! We are a safe place for learners with different levels of abilities. During class we will work on our social skills which include taking turns talking, listening to others along with back-and-forth conversations. We will practice asking one another questions to also get to know one another and build wonderful friendships. Each week we will do fun activities during class while we practice our social skills and etiquette. Some games include Simone says, bingo, "I Spy", mini scavenger hunt, Pictionary, the options are endless! We will also focus on encouragement and positive reinforcement and reminders of how wonderful each and every individual is. This class has a fun, relaxed environment and is not intended to be challenging. Weekly discussion and activity schedule: Schedule is subject to change based on learner enrollment. Week of 1/9: Favorite Animal/What animal makes this sound? Week of 1/16: Cartoon/Simone Says Week of 1/23: Superhero Favorites/I Spy Week of 1/30: Show and Tell Week of 2/6: Pictionary (guess what the teacher drew) Week of 2/13: Charades *Parents, if there are any special accommodations necessary for the class, please message us prior, so we can help prepare for our learners’ needs. *Learners are encouraged to use any forms of communication that helps them feel comfortable during class. -Learners that are nonverbal are welcome to use their communication device. -Learners can draw or write out responses. -ASL -Learners can also utilize color/letter coded notecards to respond to simple yes or no questions, colors/letters will be assigned to different answers, along with any necessary changes to help learners communicate at their best. It is recommended to have at least 3 blank notecards along with 3 bright colored crayons to assign the cards. Colors or letters will be used based on learners’ abilities. -Learners can use physical response such as thumbs up/down, nodding, etc. -If there are any other alternatives that helps learners communicate with classmates and the teacher, please inform the teacher to make specific accommodations.

Our experienced teachers have worked with special needs learners for a combination of over 20+ years. Each teacher will provide an ideal virtual classroom in a quiet area while providing activities to help engage the learners along with any accommodations necessary for a successful class. Each teacher will also take the time prior to class to read over any notes provided by parents on the learners' strengths/best methods for learning and prepare additional classroom tools and requested accommodations.
Mr. Pel currently works at a youth center working with special needs students on a regular basis. He works with children with ADD, ADHS, multiple sclerosis, cognitive delay, autism, OCD, ODD and nonverbal learners. To assist with learner communication, the use of written responses and TPR are used to help.
Ms. Chan has volunteered with children with special needs since she was in grade school. She has worked in the educational settings with learners in middle school with but not limited to IDD, cognitive delay, ASD, Down syndrome and nonverbal learners. She assisted learners with daily assignments and social skill building. She used TPR, written, and drawings as support systems of communication for learners.
Mrs. Ameanna has worked with IDD students in an educational setting for 2+ years. She worked for an alternative day program for IDD children and also taught in the classroom with ages 12-21 years old. She supported them with activities that focused on any and every topic: social skill building, reading, writing, communication and community skills etc. She was a social worker at the Department of Human Services in the adolescent unit, her team was IDD focused for children between the ages of 10-18 years old. She uses ASL and physical responses, written or drawn responses to assist with communication.
Ms. Davanh has worked for 3+ years in the educational settings with children with ASD and nonverbal learners. She utilized the use of physical responses and basic ASL to support learners.
Mrs. Terry has a son that’s 16 years old and has special needs and is also nonverbal. She has helped to support him in developing his abilities to communicate with others, daily life and social skills, and has helped him succeed in his educational needs. She utilizes ASL, written/drawn communication, and physical responses to support learning and communication success.
