In this one time culture class, we will learn how the Day of the Dead/ Día de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico. We will discuss the steps to setting up an ofrenda, family unity in Mexico, parades, fiestas, how and why they dress up like skeletons, and why they go to the cemetery at night. We will have a Q and A and discuss how the Day of the Dead compares to Halloween in the U.S. We will take a look at how each celebration has evolved over time and its history. At the end of class we will be making papel picado. Papel picado is a decorative piece of paper with cut outs in it. You will need crepe paper (regular paper or construction paper will work too) and an X-acto knife (regular scissors work too, but will be harder to cut out little pieces).

The Day of the Dead celebration is a religious holiday in Mexico in which they invite their loved ones back to the land of the living. They have a big celebration, dress up, and bring food to offer to their loved ones. Most people think it is Mexico's version of Halloween, but it is actually more similar to Memorial Day.
