Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder is part mystery novel, part history of philosophy. In this course we will study the book from the perspective of a philosopher. Students will learn about the history of Western Thought beginning with the pre-philosophy era of myths, through to the Ancient Greeks, the middle ages, and the modern era. Students will be assigned weekly readings (an average of 37 pages per week). Students will have weekly study questions which should take approximately 15-30 minutes per week to complete. There will be two optional essays (a midterm and a final) which will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Students who pass both essays will receive a course certificate.1 - 2 每週課外時間
