課堂經歷
Emotional intelligence is an essential skill for children. It is also crucial for healthy character development. Emotions are 'energy in motion. Each emotion contains a special message for us and we can only understand the message once we feel connected to it. Some emotions can be uncomfortable such as anger, sadness, shame, anxiety. However, they aren't 'negative'. If we understand the message behind every emotion, we can easily manage and regulate them. This class will help students understand the meanings behind their emotions as well as learn regulation strategies when it comes to experiencing difficult emotions. Another important component for healthy character development is empathy. Research has shown that teaching children empathy allows kids to build more stronger and secure relationships, as well as promotes good mental health. When children are able to read others' faces and emotions, they can pick up on social cues and respond in a more appropriate way. For example, if they are able to notice that their sibling seems sad, they can respond in a more empathetic way. Instead of greeting them with their usual loud and excited "Hello!", they would be more likely to provide them with personal space. This can increase social harmony among family and friends. This class will start with a weekly check-in. Next, the class will be asked a positive psychology deep thinking question. Then, a scenario will be brought up through storytelling. There will also be PowerPoint slides with pictures. Students will be asked how the character/s in the story feel and asked to reflect upon it. This will enable students to feel empathy for the characters as well as relate it to themselves. Students will also be given self-regulation strategies for some uncomfortable emotions and get the chance to practice in class. If time permits, the class will end with a fun game. Questions and Scenarios for Each Week: Week 1 (Week of March 21st): Question: What are 3 things you are grateful for? A scenario about feeling sad. Week 2 (Week of March 28th): Question: What are 3 things you did this week you feel proud about? A scenario about feeling lost and confused Week 3 (Week of April 4th): Question: What are 3 things you can do to be more kind to others? A scenario about feeling Anxiety and self-regulation strategies will be provided Week 4 (Week of April 11th): Question: What are 3 things that make you feel happy?
