課堂經歷

This class uses the Singapore Math Challenging Word Problems 2 book. This book is required to attend this class.

Prerequisite: Learners must have completed all of Singapore Math (Primary or Dimensions) 2A and 2B to attend this class or a complete second-grade curriculum. If you have questions about this, please send me a message.

This course is to prepare learners for Singapore Math (Primary or Dimensions) 3A.

Learners may join this class at any point throughout the schedule. This class does not require attendance from previous classes.
This class does not build upon prior classes.

You may see the samples of the material here: https://shop.singaporemath.com/index.php/product/challenging-word-problems-for-primary-mathematics-cc-ed-2/

Content:
Addition and Subtraction, Length, Multiplication and Division by 2 and 3, Mental Calculation, Multiplication and Division by 4, 5, and 10, The Four Operations of Whole Numbers, Money, Fractions, Time, Graphs, Shapes and Patterns, Review Questions 1, Review Questions 2, Review Questions 3

Schedule:
Each class period we will do problems from every chapter. We will rotate through in order - Chapter 1 problem 1, Chapter 2 problem 1, Chapter 3 problem 1, etc. When we complete all of the first problems, we will move on to the second problem in each chapter, and so on. This will allow the continued practice of different concepts throughout the course. The problems completed will be posted at the end of each class. The goal is to complete the entire book over the summer, however, based on the pace of the class, we may not complete all of the problems in our class time. There are 322 problems total in the book, which is roughly 36 problems per week.
The 19 topics will cycle through all 19 chapters each week so that all of the topics will be covered each week.

Homework will be posted on Wednesdays. Homework will be whatever from the 36 problems we did not complete in our class time.

Class and Learner Guidelines and Expectations:
~Learners must bring the textbook to each class. Please let your learner know before class begins if they are allowed to write directly in the textbook or not. Some people prefer to reuse the textbook. If learners will not be writing in the books, please ensure they are prepared with paper for class.
~We will use the Zoom annotate as needed when possible, so please help your learner understand where the annotate feature can be found. I encourage my learners to answer questions on the screen using the annotate feature and work together in class.
~Mute function - Please help your learner understand how to use the mute button. I encourage my learners to control their own mute button. They should stay on mute and unmute themselves when they would like to talk.
~Chatbox - Learners will also be encouraged to answer questions using the chatbox. Learners can type the answers into the chatbox if we are giving other learners time to think about the problems. If learners are able to spell, they may also then privately message me to let me know they are unsure of the topic. If there is a lot of background noise at the learner's location, the chatbox is a great tool.
~Class start time - I try to arrive and open class 5 minutes early. This allows learners to arrive early to check settings and chat with their friends in class before class begins. The class will begin on time.
~Camera/Video - I do not require the camera to be on the entire class time, however, I do need to see the learner at the start of each class. As the course goes on and I learn each learner's voice, verbal recognition is sufficient. However, with video off, if the learner is not replying, I do not know if they are confused or distracted. I prefer video on with all of my math courses.
~Recordings - Outschool automatically records all classes. I publish my math courses to be visible to learners so that they may review class time as needed. **However, I cannot publish the recordings if I show the book on the recording.** This allows my learners to review content as needed, without having to message me, then wait for it to be published. I do try to keep myself on "spotlight" so that learner video is not published in the recording.
~Environment - Class time is relatively relaxed. I use real-world examples, such as food and animals. Math is fun and can be funny, and I like my classes lively and interesting. I want my learners to feel comfortable asking me questions about the topic to ensure they do grasp the concepts. I do request learners to raise their hand to provide an answer to problems and questions.
~Teaching method/materials - I use manipulatives and physical objects whenever possible. I prefer to use a lot of colors to help with explanations. The majority of the class will be used with a whiteboard or with my document camera. I may also screen share websites at times.

Class time:
Learners should come to class prepared with their textbook and pencil. They should have paper if needed. At times, the class can be quite fast-paced. There is a lot of material to cover. Learners should contact me if they have any questions about the material. After each class, I will post a summary on the classroom wall with work completed during class.

whiteboard.fi - In class I will give the option of using a private whiteboard. There is no username/password required - you are only asked to provide your name that you are using in the Outschool classroom so that I can identify which whiteboard belongs to which learner. This is not a required tool, however, it does allow me to see the learner's work.

I have taught and tutored math for about twenty years. I hold a current teaching certificate in K-8 elementary school, with a focus on math. I am halfway to my master's in secondary math. I really enjoy math - it is very relate-able to food and money!
