每週 1-2 小時. Learners will have homework after every class, anywhere from 30 min to an hour a week. It is essential that the learners complete the assigned homework because the next class builds on the material covered. If an issue arises with an assignment please have the learner to contact me early so I may have a sufficient amount of time to help them.評估

課堂經歷
The learners will learn the basic fundamentals of ASL, Deaf culture, and deaf history. Class Overview: Deaf Culture and History are integrated into the instruction of the basics of ASL grammar and syntax, vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, and visual-manual communication. Skill-building activities, technology, and games, as well as interactive communication, will be used to enhance and enrich developing expressive and receptive skills in the target language. Classroom Participation: All learners will be expected to participate daily with their cameras on. ASL cannot be learned without actively participating in the class. Every learner is expected to participate. Often the learners will be expected to enter "ASL Zone" or “voice-off” which means we don’t use our voices. This allows the brain to effectively translate English into ASL. Also, Deaf culture expectations will be used in the classroom. Learners will learn how to maintain eye-contact while maintaining the appropriate signing space with the speaker/signer in addition to using appropriate facial grammar while signing. Learners will be signing regularly with a partner, in a small group, and in front (spotlighted) of the class. However, don’t fret, learners will always have plenty of practice beforehand. Tests/Quizzes: Quizzes & test will be used to assess the learners progress. Digital Portfolios: We will be using Flip for the digital portfolio. Throughout the week learners will be recording themselves signing various assignments and they will save them to Flip their digital journal (I will help the learners set this up in class). Deaf Culture & History resources will come from the Signing Naturally & Master ASL curriculum and the following: Linguistics of American Sign Language 4th edition by Clayton Valli Understanding Deaf Culture by Paddy Ladd A Journey into the Deaf World by Harlan Lane ** Students are not required to purchase these books. I will scan the material to them as needed.** Materials: Learners will need to come prepared to class with pens/pencils and paper. (Learners should have something to drink nearby just in case they need it.) During this 6 week class learners will learn the following: 🗓️ Week 1: Introduction and Foundations Get ready for an exciting start! We'll kick things off with introductions, set some class rules, and break the ice with a fun activity. Dive deeper into ASL sentence structure and learn how to effectively use non-manual markers like facial expressions. Learn the basics of glossing, a vital skill for ASL learners, and explore Vocabulary List 1. 🗓️ Week 2: Exploring Deaf Culture Continue refining your glossing skills to ensure clear and accurate communication. Immerse yourself in the rich Deaf culture with a spotlight on the inspiring Andrew Foster, a pioneer in Deaf education. 🗓️ Week 3: Conversational Skills and Vocabulary Expansion Put your ASL skills into practice with engaging conversational activities, allowing you to communicate confidently. Expand your vocabulary with the introduction of Vocabulary List 2, enhancing your ability to express yourself in ASL. 🗓️ Week 4: Integration and Fun Piece it all together! This week, we'll consolidate what you've learned, focusing on fluency and fluidity in ASL. Join us for ASL Food Bingo, a lively and interactive game that reinforces your vocabulary and comprehension. 🗓️ Week 5: Guest Speaker and Q&A Special guest alert! Welcome Teacher Joseph Keith from the Deaf Community for an insightful presentation on Deaf culture and experiences. Engage in a lively Q & A session with Teacher Joseph to gain deeper insights into the Deaf community. 🗓️ Week 6: Showcasing Your Skills and Celebration It's time for a personal assessment of your expressive skills. Showcase what you've learned throughout the course and receive valuable feedback. Greetings,👋🏽
I'm Jacqueline, affectionately known as Mrs. Jae by my students. Guiding individuals through the realms of ASL is a passion close to my heart. My aspiration is to introduce students to the captivating beauty of American Sign Language and foster a deeper connection to Deaf Culture. Join me in exploring ASL, Deaf Culture, Deaf History, and more, as we embark on a journey of learning and growth.
My purpose is to empower and inspire every student to embrace this captivating language and culture. My ultimate goal? Bridging communication gaps, nurturing confidence, and encouraging meaningful connections within the Deaf community.
My journey in ASL and Deaf Culture has spanned numerous years of continuous dedicated study. I embarked on this path during my high school years. Through my educational journey, I earned a bachelor's degree in Human Services with a minor in Interpreting American Sign Language, and an associates degree in American Sign Language Interpreter Training. My qualifications extend to two certifications; Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education, and ASL Communication Skills.
My connection to the Deaf community remains robust, with ongoing engagement. I've had the privilege to teach American Sign Language in vocational schools and nonprofit organizations. My commitment extends beyond the classroom, as I actively volunteer to raise awareness about Deaf Culture, and ASL.
Here's a glimpse of my annual class sequence, carefully crafted to guide your progress:
