This game is a fun way to practice reading short and long vowel words (CVC and CVCe words).  Many students confuse words such as cap and cape because they need more practice differentiating between when to use the short vowel sounds versus the long vowel sound when reading words.  The goal of this activity is to practice reading similar words fluently.

I will begin class with a quick review of short and long vowel sounds.  We will look at sample words, identify the vowel in the word, and code the word using phonics rules to help students focus on the vowel and what letter follows it.  Then we will begin the game to practice distinguishing between the similar words.  

Students need to have an understanding of letter sounds and blending 3-4 letter words to get the most out of this game. They need to know basic skills for blending words in order to successfully participate in this game.
