This self paced class (no live videos) is designed for beginner/intermediate social media users who want to learn how to market their business/hobby on social media. This class provides a thorough overview of social media safety, platforms I do/don't typically recommend for teen businesses (exploring WHY as well as exceptions), and important elements of content creation (including using social media as a local tool.) You might wonder: why do I offer platform overviews if I don't recommend the platform? Great question! Because your learner should decide for themselves if a platform works for them! An example: a lot of students come to this class thinking they want to use Youtube for social media marketing. Instead of just saying "don't use Youtube as a marketing platform, it doesn't work!," I'll share WHY it doesn't work very well, and what kinds of businesses might be an exception. This class works well for already-established businesses, folks who are totally new to social media marketing, volunteers looking to support a non-profit's social media outreach, or hobbies! Please read the Parent Guidance section below - this class includes very frank discussions about safety and mental health; some topics may be challenging. Class is split into four sections (each bullet point below is a video). Each week has a homework prompt(s). 1) Safety concerns for teens on social media (based on research/studies about social media risks) and what strategies can help keep teens safe: - Social media and physical safety - Comparison + fear of missing out - Protecting mental health and wellness - Why algorithms purposefully share dangerous or inappropriate content 2) Platform overviews for platforms I don't generally recommend for teen businesses/hobbies/etc. Includes pros and cons, as well as when these platforms might be helpful for certain kinds of businesses. - Snapchat - Twitter - Whatsapp (text messaging) - Youtube - Pinterest - TikTok 3) Platform overviews for platforms I think are most useful for teens looking to market their businesses, hobbies, non-profit, etc. - Next Door - Facebook - Instagram 4) Creating engaging, efficient, and effective posts, stories, and more! - Types of content (e.g. behind the scenes, FAQs) that engage customers - How to find and engage with local customers on social media, even if your business is international - Types of product/service photography and how to improve your cell phone photography (including how to take authentic-feeling photos without showing your face or location) 5) Final Presentation (no video - written instructions) Please feel free to reach out if you have questions about this class! I also offer a (shorter) live version of this class, and this material is also covered (less deeply) in my Semester Business Exploration.

This class specifically covers some of the main safety issues with social media platforms (inappropriate messaging, trolls, danger of sharing live location, conversation about whether teens should show their faces on social media, mental health, physical safety / self-harm / harm to others, suicidality, etc.) This is a frank conversation and is rooted in research (all research studies are linked in the classroom.) These topics might be upsetting, but are important to discuss prior to using social media for business.
I am not a health care professional, mental health professional, or lawyer. This class does not present medical or legal advice. I share research findings, healthy coping strategies from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and strategies on how to limit social media time / content.
This class will not link to, but will discuss, many social media apps, including Youtube, Twitter, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest, Nextdoor, etc.
供應清單
None - though a journal or note app will be helpful. Completely optional - if the learner would like to explore the social media apps discussed above, a smart phone is helpful (e.g. Instagram is not easily available on a desktop.)

I've been teaching social media marketing to teens and adults for 7 years, and have had several small businesses for 14+ years. I try to stay up to date on social media safety issues, and have 10 and 13 year old kids also navigating social media.
