Welcome! In this exciting class, we will step back thousands of years into the time of pharaohs, pyramids, and, of course, mummies! We'll uncover the reasons why the Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead and the religious beliefs associated with it. What is the afterlife? What role did the gods and goddesses play? Get ready to find out! We'll go step-by-step through the mummification process. We'll learn about how the brain was carefully removed through the nose, and how the organs (except...
The main objective is for learners to understand what mummification is, why it was practiced in Ancient Egypt, and its significance in their cultural and religious beliefs about the afterlife. By the end of the class, students should be able to describe the key steps involved in the mummification process, how mummification techniques evolved over time, and be able to identify and explain the terms related to mummification, such as canopic jars, natron, ankh, and the roles of various gods like Anubis.
I have a degree in Art Conservation in collections care and in Anthropology. I enjoy working with artifacts and helping to tell their stories!
This class talks about what happened in Ancient Egypt with dead bodies. We talk about how a body was prepared in relation to the beliefs around an afterlife. I also show photographs of real mummies in museums. Please make sure your students are ready for these conversations and images!
