The saxophone can be one of the funnest instruments to play, no questions asked! In order to reach that point it's important to have certain things in order such as: sound production, breath support, musicality, and technique. In this lesson, we'll make use of a variety of exercises in the material, we will play duets together, as well as listening and ear training to give my students a well rounded approach to the saxophone and music, helping them to become the best musician they can be. The lesson will be based on Standard of Excellence book 1. The book is one of the most complete and most widely used band methods available. It combines music theory, music history, ear training, and multi-cultural studies with a strong performance-centered approach to learning. Each student book features colorful highlighted sections when a new fingering, rhythm, or musical concept is introduced, making these new skills visually stimulating. No playing experience is needed for this class. Students are free to join all the classes or on the dates that works for them.
Week of August 4 - Putting the saxophone together; students will learn how to assemble the saxophone.
Week of August 11 - Preparing to play; students will be taught the right posture for holding, playing the instrument and hand
placement.
Week of August 18 - Playing the saxophone; embouchure, breathing, long and steady long tone.
Week of August 25 - Caring for the saxophone, treble clef/staff
Week of September 1 - 4/4 time signature, whole note/rest, ledger line, bar lines.
Week of September 8 - Week 4 revision and note B, A, G

Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
1) Identify characteristic of saxophone tone quality.
2) Demonstrate saxophone tone quality characteristic of a beginner.
3) Demonstrate and teach instrument assembly.
4) Demonstrate and teach embouchure formation.
5) Demonstrate and teach proper hand position.
6) Utilize and teach correct fingerings.
7) Transpose music from concert to written and written to concert for each instrument.
8) Utilize knowledge of tuning tendencies in performance and teaching.

I have been teaching and mentoring all ages and levels for over 15 years. Every student is unique, therefore, lessons are designed to fit the student individually. Olayemi's teaching style is molded to satisfy each students goals and needs. Olayemi also focuses on developing proper playing habits which is largely related to sound production. I see it as my job to help my students understand and develop the proper techniques in order for them to be the best they can be on their instrument.
