課堂經歷

Learners will apply the functional concept of a traffic light to measure the size of daily obstacles and how to respond appropriately. Problems range in size and complexity allowing learners to understand which obstacles can be solved independently and when other obstacles require the help of a safe adult. 

Class Structure:
Greeting and Introductions
Background knowledge check for functional understanding of a traffic light and the universal meaning of red, yellow, and green light/colors.
Applying the traffic light concept to ability.  Red light=always needs assistance, yellow light=I tried on my own but need help, green= I can solve this independently.
Differentiating teacher-made problems and understanding why.
Group made obstacles/problems and understanding why.
Match the problem to the appropriate response/solution activity. 
Goodbye and Exit ticket.  

My teaching style will include presentation, practice, and production (PPP) through interactive slides and discussion. 
Teacher to Student interaction: 80%
Student to Student interaction: 20%

Learners will not be sharing personal experiences but rather daily stressors they encounter and brainstorming ways to manage them.

Example: 
I lost my homework. What's the size of the problem? How can I respond/solve this? 
Before this class, many learners will say this is a red (big) problem and are unsure how to solve this problem. 
After, learners realize this is an obstacle they can manage on their own. It's a green (small) problem. I will ask for a replacement assignment, no big deal! 
Day-to-day stress can sometimes feel overwhelming but with a concrete concept for measurement and response, learners feel more confident in their ability to manage them and know when to ask for help. 

Example:
I wake up in the middle of the night and smell smoke. What's the size of this problem? It's a red (big) problem. A  red problem will always require a safe adult's assistance! I need help from someone who can take on more responsibility than I can. I need help keeping myself and/others safe.

This class is intentionally designed to support the unique needs of students on the Autism spectrum by using functional visuals (traffic light) and applying them to abstract social skill concepts to improve problem-solving skills.
