Unlock the Meaning Behind the Words: Reading Comprehension for Fluent Readers

Does your child read fluently but struggle to understand or connect with what they’re reading? They’re not alone. I know parents are frustrated, even dumbfounded, when their child is reading aloud an interesting story and entirely misses what is going on.

Factors contributing to poor comprehension:
Lack of vocabulary knowledge
Difficulty with complex sentence structures
Poor background knowledge on the topic
Not actively engaging with the text while reading

Here's What We'll Do

During 1:1 tutoring your child will learn to go beyond decoding words and start unlocking the meaning behind them with interactive lessons, thoughtful discussions, and skill-building activities. I explicitly teach and model the skills involved. Students don't just pick them up automatically. Sometimes there is such a push for phonics and decoding that text comprehension takes a back seat.

Understand Key Details: Learn how to identify the main idea, characters, and plot. Let's get this down pat early. As a K-12 teacher I know students will be doing this the rest of their education.

Think Critically: Develop skills to make inferences, draw conclusions, and connect ideas.

Engage with Texts: Build confidence in asking questions, summarizing, and discussing what they’ve read.

Enjoy Reading: Discover the joy of truly understanding and engaging with stories.

What to Expect During Class

Warm-Up Activity: Students will discuss a question or topic that relates to the book to spark curiosity and activate prior knowledge.
Shared Reading: We’ll read a portion of a book together, pausing to model and practice comprehension strategies.
Discussion and Activities: Students will respond to questions, complete hands-on activities, or create story maps to reinforce comprehension skills.
Wrap-Up: We’ll review key takeaways and set individual goals for the next session.

My teaching style is warm, engaging, and encouraging. I love what I do. With a background directing school plays and musicals, sometimes we do readers theater together. "Getting into character" helps students internalize what is happening.

Books We’ll Read: To keep students engaged, I’ll select books that are fun, age-appropriate, and rich in story elements. Some great options include: A to Z Mysteries series by Ron Roy (mystery/problem-solving focus). Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne (mix of adventure and historical context). Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White (themes of friendship and perseverance). The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (great for inferencing and empathy building). Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar (humor and critical thinking). Short nonfiction texts or articles tailored to student interests (science, animals, sports).
