課堂經歷

This is a play in 3 Acts. "12 Angry Men" focuses on a jury's deliberations in a capital murder case. A 12-man jury is sent to begin deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of an 18-year old boy accused in the stabbing death of his father, where a guilty verdict means an automatic death sentence.

Students will read and discuss the play as the teacher highlights literary devices, plot points, and character development.

In our first session we will cover Act 1. We will focus on the introduction of the characters, and discuss exposition. We will discuss what we have read, and make predictions about what will occur in Act 2.

In our second session we will cover Act 2, discuss character development and stage direction. We will see if our predictions from the previous week were correct, and make predictions about the next Act.

In our Third Session we will cover Act 3. We will discuss the falling action and resolution of the play. We will see if the characters were dynamic or static, and examine what would make a character change their stance.

Students will understand and be engaged through performing this material. While a PDF of the play will be provided, it is recommended that the learner purchases a copy of this play for notetaking and annotations.
學習目標
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
1) explain the principles of “reasonable doubt” and “innocent until proven guilty.”
2) explain the strengths and weaknesses of the American jury system.
3) describe the different types of persuasion—rational and emotional—as used by different jurors and explain which proves to be most effective.
4) explain how personal prejudices may obscure the truth in a jury room.

Twelve Angry Men raises timeless questions about the different kinds of biases, the confusing concept of truth, and the value of reason and logic within the American legal system.

I have taught this play for over 12 years in the middle school setting. I am certified to teach all grades K-12 with an expertise in ELA for Middle School and High School instruction in the state of NJ. In addition, I am also certified to be both a principal or a supervisor.
I love teaching this material and have had students perform sections of it on stage. It is truly a brilliant play and one that I am excited to bring to Outschool.
