In this ongoing reading comprehension course, students combine their love of animals with weekly reading practice in a fun and engaging thirty-minute lesson. Each week, students will read about a new animal. Before each class, students can print the article and complete the pre-reading exercises. During class, the teacher will model the week's reading comprehension skill. Then, students will use this skill as they read the text along with the teacher. They will practice using reading strategies to mark up the text, as they practice active reading. Students will discuss the features of non-fiction texts each week. They will often use graphic organizers and learn note-taking skills, as they learn new information about many exciting creatures. Students will also practice answering questions about the text to show their understanding. ⭐Text Feature Practice ⭐Reading Fluency, Vocabulary, & Comprehension Practice ⭐Levels L/M Guided Reading (3-4th grade) ⭐Students create an "animal fact card" as they read (taking notes) Some of the animals we will read about include: ⭐Arctic Fox ⭐Flamingo ⭐Swan ⭐Arctic Wolf ⭐Moose ⭐Sloth ⭐Polar Bear ⭐Sea Otter ⭐Snow Leopard ⭐Walrus ⭐Red Pandas ⭐Blue Whale ⭐Cheetah ⭐Giant Tortoise ...and many more!

Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.
