Ever wondered what it takes to raise your own chickens? This a week long crash course on raising chickens. We will cover chicken basics in a series of slides & video clips starring my own flock of chickens. Students do not need to have live chicks or chickens to take this class. It is a great course for anyone considering raising their own chickens. Of course, no chicken class would be complete without a live meeting with a chicken! Students will learn a variety of information including: Supplies, space & legal considerations, and daily responsibilities to raise healthy chickens, different chicken breeds, differences between hens and roosters, healthy chicken behaviors, & problems to look out for in your flock.
Several chicken handouts will be provided.

Students may be sensitive to the topic of chicken predators, rooster behavior, and the pecking order. No graphic images or stories will be shared regarding these topics. Students may view images of chickens that are missing feathers due to molting or chicken bullying. This imagery could be upsetting to children who worry about the chicken's appearance, but it is important for learners to understand how the pecking order works and how to solve chicken bullying issues.
I will be directing students to helpful chicken raising websites including Backyard Chickens & My Pet Chicken. I will also be using a Nearpod interactive slide presentation. Students will be able to enter the presentation using the link provided in our Zoom lesson.
