We will learn about the Ancient Civilizations around the world.

Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a very long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.

Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history and complete hands-on projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.

Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.

Annette first became interested in ancient cultures in the 1970's when the "King Tut" craze swept the nation. She continued to study the ancient cultures of Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and others in college. Some years later, she taught herself to read Latin so she could read the works of Gaius Julius Caesar in their original form. She has taught ancient history as a part of her homeschool curriculum and developed the "Life in..." History series as a way of teaching her autistic daughter history. 

Annette has completed Continuing Education Certification with OER's Big History and World History Projects and the NMNA's Foundation for Teaching and Learning about Native Americans. She completed her Best Start in Life: Early Childhood Development certificate. She is currently working on certifications for working with special needs children and her TEFL certification.

This class was developed by Annette the Teacher based on the OER Project's Big History project.

Concepts in this class were inspired by OER's Big History Project and World History Project. A variety of sources were used in developing this class, including OER's Big History Project and World History Project plus online resources and traditional textbooks including McDougall Little's World History, Hands-On History books, Tools of the Ancients books, Timelines of World History, Clothes & Crafts of Ancient History books, and The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt. Additional primary sources used were referenced from Fordham University's Internet Ancient History Sourcebook Editor: Paul Halsall including The Complete Works of Gaius Julius Caesar and numerous sites and works about ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, Africa, Central and South America, and Rome.
