A total of 74 sight words will be taught in this 10 week course. This is part one of a 2 part series (Power Phonics 1 & Power Phonics 2) which provides your child with lessons that will help enable your child to read over 900 words. My own niece, while home-schooling, was still in preschool and easily reading at a grade 2 level with this same methodology. This program is structured logically but "backwards" to many conventional reading programs. We do not begin with the ABC song (although we...
74 sight words are to be mastered, and time permitting, a few more.
As a student paying my way through University I had the privilege and opportunity to Nanny my preschool Niece and Nephew. Not one to be idle, I used my "off duty" time to research and develop the "Never Too Young To Read" program and to really consider why everyday average kids can fall through the cracks and not be able to read properly. I spoke with individuals familiar with the "whole word" method and they complained, of course, that learners of this method, later in life, are stumped and embarrassed when introduced to new words. I also noticed that learning the ABC song does not teach children to read, but in fact, introduces a cognitive step that is not necessary when reading (only spelling) and unnecessarily complicates things for budding young readers. I also considered that learning individual letter sounds before "tricky" whole words and multi-phonograms only leads children to start sounding out each letter before recognizing the larger "pieces": Once again, this is a cognitive step that serves to make the reader stumble and pause while trying to de-code those words, thereby reducing reading confidence and fluidity. After many years, most phonics programs can do the job, however, this beginners approach to phonics is specifically designed to reduce confusion and increase reader fluidity and confidence sooner. There is nothing substantially different in what I teach, but rather "how" I teach. The order, in which the concepts are taught matters: the mastery, the practice, and the "fun" quotient also all matter. That is my focus for students in this reading program.

Once registered in this course, parents will need to set up a free Quizlet account. The link to my teaching account will be provided after the first class, so there is no need to sign up with Quizlet until after we start. Other worksheet materials can be downloaded and printed within the Zoom class platform. It is also highly recommended for students to have basic drawing paper and bright crayons or markers available each class.
