課堂經歷
Angelfall is a best selling fantasy novel written by Susan Ee. Originally published in 2011, the book has been translated into 20 languages and was selected as one of the top 100 fantasy books of all time by TIME magazine. It is a young adult novel that follows Penryn - a 17 year old girl who is hunting for her sister in the midst of the apocalypse, all the while trying to avoid angels who are terrorising the streets. This class will use the novel Angelfall as a way to understand post-apocalyptic fiction and develop novel analysis skills. Students will work to deepen their understanding of the novel, as well as their understanding of the post-apocalyptic genre as a whole. Each week will include a Nearpod lesson (instructions given at the start of each week), independent reading (between 60-80 pages a week). There will also be questions and activities that learners can take part in to deepen their learning.

What is Post-Apocalyptic Literature
This week we will learn about the genre of post-apocalyptic literature using a Nearpod session. Learners will read the first 10 chapters of the book and be encouraged to think about how Angelfall fits into the post-apocalyptic genre. After the reading, learners will answer discussion questions to consolidate their learning, drawing examples from the text they have read. 課 2:
Setting the Scene
This week we will learn about 'setting'. Learners will explore the language in the story so far and be encouraged to think about what the language tells us about the setting. Learners will create an artistic representation for part of the setting so far in the story - this could be painting, drawing, a 3D model, a computer rendition or whatever your learner prefers to use. 課 3:
Characters
This week, we will look at the development of character in the story so far. We will use the S.T.E.A.L method (Says, Thinks, Effect, Actions, Look) to develop a full picture of one of the characters. Learners will share their findings within the class room and discuss this with other students. 課 4:
Plot and Opinions
We will learn about plots and structures and think about how authors use these to create a compelling story. We will finish reading the story and look back over the plot and structure of Angelfall. Learners will plot the main events of the story onto the narrative arc. We will learn about summarisation skills and practice writing a summary of the story, choosing careful and concise language to express our points. Learners will need to read Angelfall during this class. Please ensure that you are comfortable with the content of the story before enrolling. CommonSense Media recognises this as suitable for 14+ year olds.
供應清單
Students will need their own copy of the novel Angelfall by Susan Ee. This can be in any format. In week 2, there is a creative project that your learner can decide on themselves. They will need to make sure that they have all of the equipment they need to complete their chosen project.
