Based on the wisdom of homeschool educator Julie Bogart's "poetry tea times," these are meant to be light, fun breaks in the week for students to soak up the beauty of the written (and spoken!) word, as well as enjoy each other's company. Although certainly not required, I encourage students to bring something to drink and snack on while we share. - Tea time will begin with a quick round of introductions & our class norms. - To kick things off, I will briefly introduce a poet to the class,...
- Students will gain confidence in public speaking and sharing their thoughts with others. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of poetry and poets, and increase their knowledge of the modern & classic poetic canons. Students' appreciation of art and natural creativity will be cultivated.
I have an M.A. in English - Literature from NAU, graduating with distinction in May 2023. I have experience running poetry tea times within my own homeschool.
Learners should bring at least one poem they would like to share with them. By all means, interpret the idea of a "poem" loosely and feel free to bring in song lyrics, unintentional poetry, or simply a random snippet of conversation you overheard that moved you. The only "restriction" is that it must be appropriate to share in a middle school setting - please, use good judgment and keep all selected poems to those that are G or PG-rated. Thank you! :-)
