ON THE PERSONAL LEVEL: I'm the oldest of seven kids, and games have always been my family's way of expressing love and staying connected. To this day, whenever we get together we play game after game after game. I like to say I've lost a thousand games and I'm just fine, so you will be too when you inevitably lose. ON THE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL: I designed and led games and other activities for tweens and teens professionally as the Teen Center Director at my local Boys & Girls Club. I have years of experience leading small groups, teaching to everyone's skill level, and making everyone feel involved and wanted in the group. One summer, my Board Game Club was possibly the most popular Club offered by the facility for tweens and teens.

Settlers of Catan can bring out big emotions. Players have the opportunity to refuse to trade with each other and to directly sabotage other players, dice rolls rarely go exactly how you want them to, and in the end there is one clear winner and everyone else loses. Games are a great, low-risk environment to practice dealing with frustrating emotions. However, some people struggle to find any enjoyment in the game because of its competitive style. I would suggest everyone give it at least two or three tries, then if it still isn't any fun, don't feel guilty about giving it up!
