Stories of piracy provide the perfect tool for discussing the late 15th century to the early 19th century. Piracy thrived at those places where different cultures were meeting for the first time, colonies and trading posts were being created, and rulers were fighting economic wars against one another. We begin with the Portuguese and Spanish attempting to divide the southern hemisphere between themselves. By their definition, any European ship to trespass in the southern waters was a pirate...
For several years, this topic was my passion. I read book after book about pirates and the Age of Exploration. I read academic papers by the hundreds. I traced down strange links and I looked for the historical connections. When I read that many pirates were Huguenots, I committed myself to learning about the French Wars of Religion. When I read that Sir. Francis Drake had a crew member taken captive in what is now Morocco, I looked into the civil war that he had accidently stumbled into. It became a game to see how much of world history had a connection, in some way, to piracy. I read, I took notes, and I developed this class.
提供的家庭作業
Students will be required to do reading assignments in preparation for class. Students will be asked to research a historical figure for a mock debate. In this debate students will try to answer questions based on what their historical figure might have believed. Students will be asked to research a pirate to do an oral presentation. Occasional optional activities will include doing map-work and short-answer questions. There will also be optional creative writing or art project suggestions.2 - 4 每週課外時間
提供的評估
Students requiring a grade are asked to notify me of this before the second week of class. If students require a grade but wish to avoid having to talk in class accommodations can be made.提供的成績
I will provide weekly homework assignments that will help enable students to participate in the discussion. The more prepared students are for discussion, the more we can discuss! I will also provide optional activities for those who would like to do more. While the following are NOT required reading for the course, I highly recommend students pick and choose from the list and read a few of the following. Their connection to piracy may not be obvious, but they either contain topics or themes related to the course or we will be discussing their authors. 1) Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (I recommend the children's version by Barbara Nichol or the full translation by Edith Grossman) 2) Utopia by Sir. Thomas Moore 3) The Tempest by William Shakespeare 4) Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare 5) The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas 6) Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift 7) Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe 8) Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Pirates were murders, thieves, and at times patriots. I don't want to dwell on gore, but torture methods will be mentioned occasionally.
I will be providing students with reading assignments. It is very, very important that the students complete the reading assignments for each class.
