In this course students will be taught the mathematical constant pi and how it is used in real life. The topics covered will include: 1. Create a treat (to have at the end) - make a pie and use the constant pi to make some calculations (before eating it) 2. NASA mission - Students will use pi to compare Mars landing sites and calculate the length of a year for one of the most distant objects in the solar system 3. Navigation and Maps - Students will learn how maps are wrong and how pi is used...
Students will learn real world applications of the pi constant and gain more knowledge on what the public constant is.
2 Workbooks (provided the week before class) Ruler String 6 cups (900 grams) Frozen or fresh blueberries (thawed) 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp (125 grams) Sugar, divided 1/4 cup Cornstarch Zest of 1 Lemon 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp Neutral oil, like coconut Pie dough (your favorite recipe or store bought)
Since we will be using the oven parents should supervise learners. Hot pies and ovens should be handled cautiously. The pie ingredients do not contain allergens such as soy, nuts, or dairy. However when purchasing or making your own pie dough you should note that there are vegan and non-vegan options. Finally, the pie is not meant to be consumed by one person, so learners should share the pie when they are done in the class with their household.
