This is an on-going class that meets weekly to learn about the many different cultures of the Pan-Pacific area including but not limited to Tonga, Hawai'i, Samoa, the Philippines, Guam, Fiji, New Zealand and many more island groups. Join us as each week we learn about the cultural traditions, rich histories, lifestyles, foods, games and more from each island group. This is a fun and interactive class with student participation and discussion encouraged. Students will leave this class having been enriched with an understanding and appreciation for Pacific island peoples and their cultures. 
Week 1: Tonga
Week 2: New Zealand / The Maori
Week 3: Hawai'i
Week 4: Samoa
New topics will be introduced in the coming weeks.

Students will walk away with an understanding of the main historical and cultural elements from the various Pacific islands regions/ groups including but not limited to their customs, traditions, stories (myths and legends), values, beliefs, food, clothing styles, and general lifestyles and worldviews.

There may be talk of hunting and fishing which involves the killing of animals as food resources. This discussion is not detailed but may be merely referenced by the teacher or brought up by a student as a comment or question. There may also be a brief reference by the teacher articulating that a certain dance may originate from times of war between differing groups in the past. Some of these cultures still do their dances, some of which originate from this era prior to European contact and were created as war dances.

I have family (cousins) whose father is from the Pacific islands. I grew up doing the traditional dances, songs and cooking styles as a boy my entire life. I speak their language fluently and am considered by many as a cultural expert having perfected my understanding of the culture and being able to make understanding of it to the viewpoint of outsiders with ease. I also took several years of college courses in the language and culture of the Pacific islands. I even worked at the university as a teacher's aide in the pacific island cultural language and culture classes as an upperclassman.
