The learning goals for this course will look critically at the U.S. military Operation Eagle Claw and how this failed American hostage rescue attempt led to a small-scale disaster in the Iranian desert in April of 1980. This class will focus on the political issues, leaders, and military tactics used during this hostage crisis. The learning goals will be about the military science, political situation in America and Iran during this time, and to focus on military tactics, and planning for this rescue attempt. It will point out the short-falls in military planning, funding, and reasons why this military operation failed and how the military and civilian leadership learned valuable lessons which led to significant changes in the Department of Defense.
As a 20-year retired military Air Force officer, I have worked with special operators and on special operation missions. Additionally, I enjoy teaching military history and teaching anything science related.
