The open ocean is one of the most desolate places in the entire world. Covering most of the Earth’s surface and often stretching more than a mile deep, the open ocean can appear to be a big bowl of blue emptiness. However, there is more than meets the eye. The open ocean provides pathways for massive migratory species like whales and hunting grounds for large sharks. In this 40-minute lesson about the open ocean, students will learn about some of the largest and fastest animals on the planet....
Students will be familiar with the major characteristics of the open ocean. Students will identify and describe at least 3 species that call the open ocean home. Students will understand how a common adaptations support various open ocean creatures.
