Does your child need math help or fun math challenges? This class is tailored to your child's needs--I can work with children for 20 minutes to an hour per meeting time. If you communicate with me about your child's needs ahead of time, I can prepare a plan of action. Ideas for ways I can work with your child: Homework help, basic math fact recall and confidence, problem solving and application, or an encouraging person to ask all the questions they may not get answered in their regular math time. I taught full-time for sixteen years, and math is one of my favorite subjects! I excel in teaching thinking, problem solving, and pattern finding, not just teaching isolated methods that may not mean much to students. I believe in providing for play, discussion, and materials you can hold and move in math. I have a Masters of Special Education of Academically and Intellectually Gifted Students, and taught in a magnet school for gifted students for eight years. This means I am an expert at challenging students, delving deep into topics, and helping those for whom math isn't their greatest strength. A basic class may look like this: Greeting Number talk--an engaging, brief problem to get our math brains warmed up and model that we may all see solutions in different ways. Focus content--depending on what you'd like me to help with, this may be reviewing a concept on a homework assignment, learning a new way to multiply large numbers, or a creative problem solving opportunity that your child can explore to stretch their math skills. This may be direct instruction with models I give with time to practice, or it may be a collaborative discussion. Game or puzzle--I have many math games that use logic, number, pattern, which help increase enjoyment of math and build mathematical thinking. I believe math is best learned by first having concrete experiences that can translate to conceptual ones. I believe children should be given the chance to play with numbers and shapes and develop connections as they make sense to them. I believe in giving children time to explore their own ideas before I tell them a certain way to do something. Please contact me to let me know what areas of need your learner has so that I can prepare for your learner. I am available to communicate with you before and after classes to let you know areas of growth or areas of need I see. If we are a good fit together and your child continues with me, I plan to make this a collaborative planning process, where I use my observations and your feedback to plan future sessions.
學習目標
Students will work on areas of need or desire in math as identified by the student and/or family and/or from class observations I make. We will work at your child's pace to increase your child's comfort, knowledge, and problem solving ability in math.

供應清單
Depending on the areas of need your child has, there may be some manipulative that would benefit them. We can communicate about that when we communicate about the areas you'd like me to work on. Students should always have something to write with and something to write on. We will often use dice and may sometimes need colored pencils. If I'd like your child to have a particular worksheet or game board, I will post it on the classroom page before class. If you would like me to work with your child on assignments from another teacher or math program, please scan those materials and send to me through Outschool before I meet with your child.

I taught full time for sixteen years in elementary school. I got a Masters of Special Education of Academically and Intellectually Gifted students, and have a passion and understanding for assessing and meeting children’s needs in multiple ways. Through assessment of my own practices to achieve National Board certification, I learned more about letting my observations of student understanding drive instruction. Nothing is more exciting to me than watching a child reach a new understanding or develop confidence in a new skill. I believe that all learners benefit from approaching learning in multiple ways. How?
Math: I know, for some, that word strikes terror! But, never fear, math can be fun! By giving students opportunities to construct their own meaning and methods using concrete materials, having lots of opportunity for discussion and sharing ideas, and focusing on doing a few problems thoroughly, students will develop deep understanding and confidence that they can apply to future concepts.
In writing in upper elementary through high school, I love to use writers’ workshop for us to share thoughts about each other’s writing, give positive feedback, and ask questions that could lead the writer to a better next draft. We also read and assess published writing to help us learn and improve our writing skills.
Parents often wonder how to help a child who knows “how” to read, read for understanding, enjoyment, and to critically assess text for validity, artistic value, or personal enjoyment. Reading high interest materials for true purpose can help students improve their reading skills and nurture a love of reading. I have found structuring reading around the same skills proficient adult readers use to be most helpful: asking questions, deciding how to approach unknown words, making predictions, rereading when appropriate, using the structure in a given text for clues, inferring, enjoying humor and descriptive language. As in all subjects, sharing ideas is crucial! Readers workshop may look like an outstanding book club, with us sharing the observations we have made in our main text. To supplement, we will also discuss short passages that focus on our main skill, such as making inferences.
