This ongoing course leads students through an examination of catastrophic periods in history paralleled with true stories/narratives of survivors that humanize those affected. In addition, a psychological lens will be applied to our study in order for students to analyze the motivations and choices of individuals. Through this interdisciplinary study, my goal is to get students to think deeply about human behavior and history. By focusing on the choices of individuals who experienced this history as victims, witnesses, collaborators, rescuers, and perpetrators, students come to recognize the relevance of this history in our lives and our world today. This class focuses primarily on ANALYSIS and APPLICATION. Students need to read at least a 7th grade level. Ultimately, this course will focus on reading, writing, and speaking critically, as well as looking at literature through a factual, historical study. This class is ONGOING (students may join or leave at any time). Many classes may have a short reading or video for students to watch before attending. Shorter readings will be done in class. Note: If your student requires extra modifications, accommodations, or assistance, please let me know. Class Rules The overreaching question of this class is identifying what it means to be human and how humans can appropriately coexist with our world. This class is discussion-heavy. Students may discuss vocally or through the chat, as long as it is on topic. I ask that students do not use the chat for anything besides response or discussion points related to the class topics. The chat may also be used for writing. I do not require students to keep cameras on, but it does make the class a bit more interactive. Schedule: Week of July 7: "The Danger of a Single Story" by Chimamanda Adichie Week of July 14: "The Eye of the Beholder" (abridged reading from "Twilight Zone" Week of July 21: "Words Matter" and The Roots of Antisemitism Week of July 28: The Weimar Republic Week of August 7: The Rise of the Nazi Party & Jewish Life Before the War Week of August 14: The Power of Propaganda & Youth and the National Community Week of August 21: Kristallnacht, Hitler’s Ideology Week of August 28: America and the Holocaust
