課堂經歷
Do myths really matter today? Absolutely! Probably you have heard of Nike, the brand of athletic gear, or have seen how stores are decorated with hearts and cupids during Valentine’s Day or have read about the Apollo 13 space mission. All of these are examples of how our modern societies have received and adapted mythical images. Myths are still relevant, and we see references to them everywhere, from science to pop culture. In this class, we will delve into the stories of fourteen Greek gods. The objective of the club is to help learners understand more about the world we live in, through the eyes of Greek culture, but also assist them in the development of creative thinking as well as collaboration, communication, and public speaking skills. To explore myths, we will use a variety of visual materials, that include, but are not limited to, powerpoint presentations, videos, and images. This class uses a collaborative and inquiry-based approach, which means that learners will take ownership of their own learning by sharing their points of view with the class and by completing a series of activities and tasks. List of Topics: Apollo: Lonely on Mount Olympus Ares: Make War Asclepius: Let Me Heal You Atlas: Help Wanted Cronus: Go Titans! Dionysus: I Love to Party Eros: You Will Love Me! Hades: Welcome to the Underworld Hephaestus: I am the One to Blame Hermes: Sneaky and Sly Pan: Don’t Panic Poseidon: Welcome to my Water World Prometheus: Meet your Maker Zeus: I am the King This class is taught by Laura - she holds an MA in Comparative and World Literature with focus on Classical Reception and Spanish. She is a PhD candidate in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, and her languages of specialization are Spanish, Mandarin, and English. Laura also holds a BA in Classical Philology, with a specialization in Latin, Greek, and Mythology. For her MA in Comparative and World Literature, she wrote a dissertation on how contemporary literatures have received and adapted the myth of Medea.
