課堂經歷
This one-time class is the condensed version of my two-day class about the same exact topic! This class will test students' inferencing skills to “read between the lines” as they try and solve a murder mystery! Practicing good inferencing is an important step to becoming a better reader and deeper thinker. Inferencing helps us to figure out what is not being explicitly stated. Students will receive 24 clues to try and figure out the murder mystery by the end of class. I will reveal the clues a four at a time, and give students time to write down inferences and guesses about each group of clues they receive. We will discuss our guesses after each group of clues is given. As students receive new clues, they will have to adjust their thinking and their guesses. Discussion among their classmates is highly encouraged! Class will be structured as follows: - Introductions & Icebreaker - Read all clues, four at a time, and have students make inferences and guesses for each set of clues - Discuss guesses - Write down final guesses (5-10 minutes) - Discuss final guesses and reasoning - BIG REVEAL - Who did it and why?? - Who got the answer right? In how many clues did you get the right answer? - What clues were most important to the case? Were there any holes in the case? Where? - How did you like class? (feedback) Supplies needed for class: - Pen or pencil - Inference sheet (provided, printed before class) Let's see who can solve the mystery first!

I taught this lesson many times to my students in school and they loved it! This class is geared toward teaching inferencing skills. Making inferences is a very important step toward full comprehension and deeper thinking about texts. This activity is a fun way to sharpen those skills!
