During this book study, not only will students be reading a new story, but they will also be practicing communication skills, comprehensions skills and strategies, and engaging with other students over the contents of the book. Wolf Hollow is a great book because it teaches students about the effects of bullying, how you should treat people, and how bullying needs to be stopped. During each class, we will read two chapters together and then the students will be responsible for reading one chapter on their own at home before our next meeting. After each chapter is read, the class will discuss the events, characters, and setting of the book. Students will also discuss and complete a reading strategy for each chapter. There are 27 chapters, 2 chapters per class meeting and 1-2 chapters as homework. The last class meeting, we will read the last two chapter and then share your opinions about the book. Here is an example schedule for class work and homework: Meeting 1: group read chapters 1 and 2 Homework: read chapter 3 before next class meeting Meeting 2: group read chapters 4 and 5 Homework: Read chapter 6 By assigning homework it allows the students to practice reading on their own and applying the reading strategies we are using in class without assistance from a teacher. This class allows me to incorporate lots of comprehension strategies in each chapter. I will provide a handout for students to use during or after our class meetings. I will frequently reference this handout each class meeting. This handout will help students practice their skills. Students should be able to read at a 4th grade level before joining this class. This prior knowledge will help them when it comes time to follow along and comprehending the text of this book.
學習目標
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills, incorporate new strategies, and practice identifying different text features all while getting lost in the story of Annabelle and her courageous acts of kindness.

This book is reccommended for students in grades 5th- 8th grade. It is about bullying and how the main character defended another person from the effects of bullying. This book not only teaches about bullying but also about showing compassion for others and standing up for what you believe in.
Here is the Synopsis of Wolf Hollow:
Despite growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has led a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, though her bullying seems isolated at first, quickly escalates. Toby, a reclusive World War I veteran, soon becomes the target of Betty's attacks. While others see Toby's strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. And as tensions mount in their small community, Annabelle must find the courage to stand as a lone voice for justice.

Hey! I'm Mrs. Kirbie! I am so excited to share my love for reading and history. I am currently a high school social studies teacher but have also taught middle school. I am an experienced English, Reading, and Social Studies teacher for both Middle School and High School students. I strongly believe that social studies helps improve reading skills and having great reading skills helps students in all areas of learning. I love helping students perfect their skills through practice and exploration. My teaching style consists of repetition practice, lectures, cognitive discussions on topics, and visual learning. I think constant repetition of skills helps students create appropriate habits and lets them build their skills. I work hard to make my classes a place where students can improve without pressure and find a love for learning through reading!
A few fun facts about me are that I grew up on a ranch with cattle and horses. I am a country girl at heart and love to be outside. I have my own cattle ranch that I will be sharing with husband! Along with working on the ranch, I compete all across the United States in rodeos. I compete in the breakaway roping event. I grew up in a rodeo family and intend to raise my future children in the same atmosphere. I believe that hard work takes you farther than talent. One of my favorite sayings, that I learned from my father is, "Winners never quit, quitters never win, and cheaters never prosper". I implement this in all aspects of my teaching career because I think it is something that everyone needs to learn and use their entire life. Nothing worth having is ever easy to obtain.
My personal background has shaped my teaching career because it proves that there are multiple ways to learn and accomplish a task. Through my work on the farm and with animals, I have learned that every student doesn't learn the same way. They may need to be taught from a different approach or be assessed differently than tradition. I pride myself in being able to adapt my lessons to fit the needs of each student.
