One of the top things to do in London is to partake in afternoon tea. This is a tradition that dates back to the mid 1800's when one woman was hungry around 4pm and needed some tea and cake! While many tourists come to London and enjoy this meal, most don't understand the history behind it. During this class, we will talk about how England became a tea-drinking nation, and how late dinner time meant that eating something mid-afternoon was the perfect solution. You'll be given two handouts for this class -- one will be used during class to answer questions and reference what we have learned. The other is a list of items and recipes that you might want to prepare to "partake" in our tea class virtually. I'll show you how to make the perfect cup of tea! Fancy hats or crowns are always welcome, so feel free to dress up to learn! (While you might not have a fancy hat or crown, you could wear any kind of fancy outfit, because we celebrate everyone's unique style -- or you can just dress comfortably without any fancy hats!) At the end of the class, you will further understand the history of afternoon tea, why it is so special, the difference between afternoon tea, high tea, cream tea .... and some proper tea etiquette to use at the table! This is a delicious class! (Please note: you do not have to prepare food/tea for this class -- you can simply watch and learn -- and you are welcome to eat/drink whatever you like during class!)

As a London tour guide, I offer tours and classes about afternoon tea. Sometimes they consist of attending an afternoon tea at a fancy hotel with a step-by-step explanation on the elements of the tea and offering etiquette lessons. Other tours include shopping for tea and discussing tastes and history in general. This is a subject that I enjoy. While I was born in Texas and drank iced tea most of my life, I have come to love a cup of hot tea with milk, as well as scones, jam, cream ... and desserts! My favourite tea on a daily basis is Earl Grey, but I often have a smoky lapsang souchong in the afternoon. I'm a big fan of crumpets, but those are actually a morning delicacy!
