In this week long course, students will be presented each day with an interesting history of a 'monster.' Those who love Rick Riordan stories will enjoy learning more about the Loch Ness monster, real historians writing about living dragons in the ancient world, mermaids, giant kracken --and more! Our job is to solve the mystery of whether each creature actually existed. If the creature was real--was a monster? What skills can we use to figure out what's real, what's legend, and when people are trying to hoax us? In this course the instructor will: Present students with fascinating accounts of 'monsters' from history. Offer students a chance to act as historical detectives--developing theories and learning how to test them with reasoning skills. Guide students through critical thinking exercises in an attempt to separate fact from legend. Argue for whether a creature they've studied was a real monster or not. Take the skills we've learned looking at history and apply it in each class to photos, videos, and news items on the internet. FOR PARENTS: This course gives kids a taste of science-based skepticism while they explore a fascinating topic. Key words: science for kids, fun kids camp, Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson, ancient greek monsters, myth, mythical creatures, creatures, fearsome monsters, dungeons and dragons, monsters from myth and fiction, dragons and beasties, dragons and unicorns,

其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
There will be a discussion of defense mechanisms used by animals at points in this class. Such methods often involve bodily fluids. Students who promptly roll over shrieking with laughter at the mention of scat or urine will have to try to contain themselves.
供應清單
Sometimes students will receive handouts to fill out after class as a fun way to test their memory. Other times we'll have a fun short quiz at the end of class. This will help students retain and remember the material.

教師專業知識和證書
Monsters are always fascinating to contemplate, but it's equally interesting to peel away the title of monster and see what's underneath. As a college rhetoric professor I've taught a course on Monsters & Society, so I've been researching monsters in history this past year. This class will challenge students to think about why monsters hook our attention. More importantly, students will become active learners in an attempt to figure out what these creatures might have been in our known world and how pranksters and the media can work side by side to exploit a gullible public.
