This is not a typical book study! It's WAY more exciting. We'll combine reading the book/story with all sorts of other learning aspects. From investigating why the author wrote certain things, character examination to geography of the area/s we learn about within the book, to history of the time (when the book took place), to the history of the horse breeds we discover. We also add silliness and a love of learning. Welcome to the world of wild mustang ponies of Chincoteague. Where the wild mare, Phantom races along the beaches and the Stallion Pied Piper rounds up his herd and keeps them all safe. Phantom has a foal named Misty who is cute and fuzzy. Two children who live with their grandparents have longed to go on the pony round up and have a wild mustang of their own. Paul and Maureen Beebe finally have their chance. They love the freedom and the wildness of the mustangs and want one for their own. Come along on the journey of reading this amazing book by Marguerite Henry and find all about the beautiful relationship between wild and gentle, human and horse. See how Paul and Maureen find their Misty and see what happens with the wild Mustangs of Chincoteague. Students will read this fantastic classic book and discuss the plot, characters and historical content both fact and fiction. Learners will discuss possibilities of how plot and character description is important and how it paints a picture for the reader. Learners will discover the facts that Marguerite Henry used as parts of her book and learn about the real Misty horse and how she is connected to the book and the history of Chincoteague. Students will learn all about which pieces of the book are fictional and also true stories and facts about Chincoteague and Pony Penning day. Students will discover how the Beebe family in real life is connected to this book as well. Come along on this journey of reading and let's be wild of spirit like the mustangs.

Class 1: Students will have read chapters 1-3 of Misty and be ready to discuss how Chicoteague and Assateague became popluated with the ponies. They will meet Paul and Maureen Beebe and understand why they are living with their grandparents on Chincoteague Island. We'll be introduced to Phantom, wild mustang mare of the island.
