Please note that there is a High School Class as well. If your student is in 7th or 8th grade and advanced or, they have experience already, they may wish to register for the higher-level course. That being said, this is a challenging curriculum for middle schools. Often parents don't realize that competitive debate is very structured with a lot of new terminology for students. Students will have about 1 hour of homework a week. Please contact the instructor directly for more details.

This is a two-semester class that will focus on public speaking and debate techniques. Part II focuses on a different debate style: Public Forum. This class focuses on building speaking skills, learning how to write a case and Lincoln Douglas Debate Style. Lincoln Douglas is an individual debate style, but we will work in groups.

The hope is students will have fun and showcase their favorite projects. Students may choose to compete at the local level in their school districts and will learn about the various events they can enter. The class also SPARS. I give the students a topic and we have mini debates on a regular basis using current or past debate topics or topics the students wish to debate. Our first unit will focus on speech and then we will move to debate, which is a bit more academic, and research driven. Topics are chosen from the National Speech and Debate Association website.
Class units include:
Public Speaking: Skills, Personal Speech, Informational and Demonstrative.
Debate: Lincoln Douglas, Constructing a Debate.

All events will be examined in class over the year and students will choose those they wish to work with for their projects.

I have taught this class for many years in a traditional setting and coached our High School Speech and Debate team for almost 10 years. I also continue to work with award winning students one to one on both NSDA and TOC circuits. Full disclosure, I currently workk for Potomac Debate and coach both middle school students and high school students. My students have won several State Championships in various events and my students have qualified for Nationals and won prestigious tournaments such as Harvard. Debate is hard work but so rewarding. Some skills that we work on are body posture, eye contact, hooks, fillers, facial expressions, research, credible versus biased sources and so much more. The skills and friendships students gain from this class will last a lifetime.

Part II of this class focuses solely on Debate and Part One is a pre-requisite

Students will need to practice their pieces and/or debates. They will present during class. I am okay with video cameras and sound off during class. However, for their presentations they will need to share. If they absolutely cannot for various reasons, please let me know so accommodations can be made before our class begins. Students will need to purchase their own scripts for class at a reasonable cost. The class is graded traditionally, and is project based.
供應清單
Our debate section does not require purchased materials. Only access to articles (both newspaper and research papers). Our speech section requires the student to purchase scripts. These are available on Amazon and the cost is reasonable. I do have some scripts available per request.

I am a semi-retired Professor and High School teacher. I am also a practicing attorney in New York State. I taught Speech and Debate for many years at the Middle and High School Level. I was an award winning coach at the State level. My students also competed at the National Level. Several received scholarships to college based on their speech and debate accomplishments. I have also taught Advanced Placement US Government, Advanced Placement Comparative Government and traditional High School Government for over ten years. I know it is important to introduce a fact based, non biased lesson to students that will foster discussions with their family. For twenty years I have had the opportunity to work with students from Pre-K through Graduate School in both a traditional learning atmosphere and those classes that deviate from neurotypical teaching. I held my teaching certification in World History/US History/Government and Economics for Middle and High School. My teaching philosophy is that all students are individuals and unique learners that must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is my desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential. I will provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and where mistakes are considered education victories.
While incorporating the eight learning styles into each class, I believe that there are five essential elements that are conducive to learning. (1) The teacher's role is to act as a guide. (2) Students must have access to hands-on activities. (3) Students should be able to have choices and let their curiosity direct their learning. (4) Students need the opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment. (5) Technology must be incorporated into the school day.
