國中英語班【5年級+6年級】

**Students may join at any time! This class offers review days often so students won't miss any material no matter when they join or if they need to pause and take a break. 

Most importantly ----> I make the classroom a fun environment! Games, MadLibs, Blooket games, videos, even hangman for tricky spelling words, anything to get the students engaged and interested in learning. 

Language arts is comprised of many elements. This class will cover the following over the course of the year:

Reading comprehension --> We will cover basic reading work such as summarizing and main points but also, advanced literacy analysis skills. The readings get harder as the year goes on! Students will be introduced to over 20 different books and authors!

Writing --> First, we will cover the necessary writing skills. Second, we will practice using these skills and students will be showcasing them all towards the very end! (My degree in creative writing comes in handy here. I take this part of class very seriously. It does not matter what your student's future goals are, writing is a much-needed life skill!) Students will write both creative short fiction and formal paragraphs.

Grammar --> First half of the year is learning new grammar terms, why we need to know them, and how to use them properly when we write. Second half of the year works on practicing and memorizing these terms. Review is key here!

Spelling and Vocabulary --> Each week students are introduced to spelling rules and vocabulary words totaling over 100 new words learned for the school year.


JANUARY
Week of January 7 - Reading: Intro to storyline, arc, and plot - Paddington clip
Week of January 14 - Grammar + 3 vocabulary words: Early years grammar review - nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives. Intro to book:  The Penderwicks 
Week of January 21 - Writing + 3 spelling words: Writing compound and complex sentences
Week of January 28 - Grammar + 3 vocabulary words: Irregular plural nouns, adverbs, pronouns


FEBRUARY
Week of February 7 - Writing lesson: 6 ways to start a sentence. Grammar: Homophones and homographs
Week of February 14 - Writing lesson: Character sketch day! - Creating our own Disney characters that will be used in future writing projects.
Week of February 21 - Grammar: Antonyms and synonyms. Writing lesson: Commas, apostrophes, and indents. + 3 vocabulary words Intro to book: Crenshaw 
Week of February 28 - Grammar: Concrete and abstract nouns + bingo game day! + 3 spelling words. Intro to book: The World According to Humphrey


MARCH
Week of March 7 - Writing lesson: Crafting topic sentences - Parrot fish video for perfect paragraph practice.
Week of March 14 - Writing lesson: Peer editing and revision of crafted paragraphs - Slug sandwich method! Intro to book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Week of March 21 - Grammar: Figurative language: Metaphors and similes, hyperboles + 3 spelling words + 3 vocabulary words. Intro to book: Spiderwick 
Week of March 28 - Writing lesson: Writing a letter + addressing an envelope. Intro to book: The Twits


APRIL
Week of April 7 - Writing lesson: Thesaurus skills + creating food ads! Intro to book: Poppy
Week of April 14 - Grammar: Personification, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. Intro to book:  Ghost Hunters and the Mud Dripping Monster
Week of April 21 - Reading - Shel Silverstein - Poetry writing practice. Poetry vocab bingo: Stanza, lines, meter, rhyme scheme, enjambment, and motif. 
Week of April 28 - Writing: Summary writing lesson, note-taking. (We get to watch a fun How's It Made video for this class!) Hamburger paragraph outliner. Intro to book: The Indian in the Cupboard 


MAY
Week of May 7 - Writing games: Writing game day! "What's in the bag?" "Whose line is it anyway?" "One word matters" ...and more if time allows! Intro to book: The Phantom Tollbooth 
Week of May 14 - Reading - Narrative point of view. Pathos, ethos, logos --> fun commercial quiz game 
Week of May 21 - The 5 W's - Wacky sentence writing day. Intro to book: Wings of Fire
Week of May 28 - Grammar: Their/they're/there.  To/too/two. Your/You're. Its/it's - Homophone review. Intro to book: Wonder
