During this one-time class, students will get hands-on practice creating graphs using Microsoft Excel. Students will also get practice in interpreting data and discuss how business decisions are made. Halloween is a big business in the United States! Consumers spend money on candy, costumes, decorations, scary movies and more! But, where do consumers spend the most? How many wear costumes and go trick-or-treating? What are the top grossing horror movies of all time? We will examine news sources to learn more about Halloween spending. We will then determine the type of graph that would best show the data we read about. Finally, we will create the graph using Excel. The class will cover bar, line, and pie graphs. If time allows, we will also look at Australian Halloween spending trends. I will share my screen so students can watch me describe how to use the program. Students should have Microsoft Excel on their computer prior to starting class, so they can use the program during class. As time allows, the students will have the ability to share their screen in order to ask questions and share their work. Students do not need any experience with Excel, but should have basic desktop or laptop knowledge, such as the ability to use a mouse, keyboard and open a program.

I enjoyed a ten-year corporate buying career, in which I made buying decisions for a national chain of more than 4,000 retail stores in the United States. I often analyzed consumer spending to determine what these stores would sell, including what types of Halloween candies and snacks! During this time, I often used Excel in my decisions and had the opportunity to train many people to use Excel.
