Students will learn how to identify bias in media sources as well as methods for finding secondary sources of information when a story or claim may not be accurate. We will cover various topics that are currently in the news. These topics will be dependent upon the timing of the course and so they may include issues involving war, violence, criminal activities, people's rights, government actions and anything else that might be in the news. We will start by looking at some news stories that I will have chosen and examen how we can be misinformed if we rely on the wrong sources of information. We will then explore other sources in order to get a more complete picture of the story. Learners are encouraged to come to the class with questions about stories that are currently in the news and we will work together to examine them and to find the most accurate and reliable sources of information. After I have gone through my example with them, learners will be encouraged to take some time to look for accurate information about the story that is of interest to them and report what they have discovered with the rest of the class. When the class is over, learners will be encouraged to keep asking questions and seeking reliable sources for the answers to their questions.

The seminar will be focused on the current events of the previous few weeks. Current events can include topics that involve all manner of potentially upsetting topics. However since this course is focused on how to effectively navigate new stories and current evens it is important that we do not avoid topics that are currently in the news, even if they are upsetting.
All possible efforts will be made to discuss any and all issues with an objective lens and with sensitivity and understanding. Please do not sign a student up for this class if you would prefer that they avoid reading about or discussing certain topics that appear in the news.
先決條件
Students should first complete the Intro to Media Literacy Workshop where we will develop some media literacy strategies before exploring current events.
教師專業知識和證書
I have been teaching high school history for 20 years and I have included the evaluation of current events in my class curriculum every year because media literacy has always been critical for students who are trying to understand the world we live in. Those lessons have only become more and more important with the rise in prevalence of social media as a source of information for many young people.
