In the Media Literacy: Becoming an Informed Consumer, students will learn the foundational techniques used by marketers to get them to buy products. The topics covered include the advertising techniques of facts (observed and opinion) and opinions (supported and unsupported), positive and negative cause-and-effect situations, false cause and single cause fallacy, causation/correlation, false dilemma, circular reasoning, repetition, appeal to pity, bandwagon, testimonial, purr and weasel words.

The class structure will be one of support for individual ideas and contributions. Discussion and questioning will be encouraged. I facilitate an inquiry-based approach to learning which I believe increases students self-sufficiency and encourages learning and collaboration.

Learners will be able to interact with me through discussion in class and by posting text messages in the classroom outside of regular class time.

I am offering this class because I believe students need to be more aware of the techniques used to persuade them to buy products. This knowledge will help them develop skills as informed consumers and avoid purchasing items that do not meet their expectations or needs. As a language arts specialist, I have taught media literacy many times over my 38-year teaching career. During that time, I never experienced a student who was not interested in learning more about advertising techniques and the psychological approach used to entice buyers.
