We will explore basic math concepts through art. Focus will vary somewhat, depending on the range of learners within the class. Focus on easier topics or harder topics will be done - again depending on the learners' abilities. Week of January 14th - Linear Equations: y = mx + b Depending on the class level, we will explore the following: Multiplication of two and three digits Solving for x, thinking about how this ties to multiplication and division How to graph a straight line and how to mathematically represent it will be covered. We'll also create fun art using straight lines on graphs. Week of January 21st - Factoring and Simplifying polynomials Depending on learner ability, one may start with the concept using numbers and then adding letters into equations. How binomials can tie into the Punnett square in biology (just touch on this). Create a fun colorful graph by graphing lines and then coloring the spaces created. Depending on level - figure out the equations of the lines in the art or simply just have fun. Week of February 4th - Triangles and Angles Learn about the three types of triangles and all about angles. Discussion on types of angles and rules will be covered. Cosine, Sine, and Tangent of angles - depending on ability - may be in-depth or just touched on. Create a drawing using triangles and circles. An infinity triangle (Escher) will be discussed. Week of February 18th - Pythagorean Theory - Sides of a Triangle What is squaring and square rooting? What is cubing and cube rooting? What exponents to the x? 10 to the power of an amount? Solving for sides and angles of triangles using pythagorean theorem and sine, cos, and tan - depending on learner ability. We'll draw an infinity triangle (Escher). We'll consider making three dimensional triangles and think about how to stack them. Week of February 25th - Parabolas: y = x^2 Discussion of parabolas. How to plot them. What is a maximum or minimum? What are x-intercepts? Create a fun colorful graphed rainbow or umbrella or any other creation. Week of March 3rd - Fibonacci series What is a sequence and a series? How is the Fibonacci series tied into nature? Learn about the tie between Fibonaccie and Sierpinski. Learn how to draw the Fibonaccie series. Turn the drawing into a snail or something else. There will be open lecture and discussion about math and art. Learners are welcome to offer ideas and ask questions. I ask open questions, that learners are welcome to answer. If no one offers an answer, I just simply answer and continue. I'm open to all learning styles. Learners may be as involved as they wish. They may want to do the drawings and be very involved or they may wish to just watch.
學習目標
Learners will gain math knowledge related to linear equations, Pythagorean theory, Fibonacci series, geometry, and parabolas. These will be taught in fun art ways mainly on graph paper. Learners will also have a chance to think about how to create art using math.

學士學位 在 科學 從 University of Waterloo
Hi, I'm Trudy Field. I have a Bachelor of Environmental Chemistry degree from the University of Waterloo. I love to make teaching fun. Students learn best when learning is fun. I like to make the class interactive and entertaining.
I have always loved to teach and coach people. I love those a-ha moments when someone learns something new and experiences the happiness in knowing a skill has been mastered.
I like to tutor chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses at a junior high and high school level. I like to teach fun parts about these subjects and the fundamentals that would help a student understand parts of high school courses. I have tutored many high school students.
Coaching figure skating has been a passion of mine for over twenty years. I like to figure out how people learn and to interact with different personalities.
I believe students learn best when taught in a fun way. I like to allow a bit of autonomy in a class. While coaching skating, I offer choices of what we'll learn next - like spins or jumps. We'll inevitably cover both during that session or by the next session. I like to try to be fun in class and will allow a little bit of fun after setting guidelines to ensure learning is still the priority.
A fun project I did this winter was build a backyard skating rink! I did it through stomping the snow and then flooding the backyard with water. My son and I rigged up a simple flooding machine too!
