課堂經歷

Here we are! Welcome to the Mandarin Madness Boot Camp...A REAL life version!

If you have already been to my other programs, you pretty much know what to expect. That’s right! A lot of FUN! As one part of my "Real-Life" series, this six-week camp focuses on your daily life at home. You will be taken into different scenes such as your regular morning routine, flower garden, birthday party and how about a Chinese take-out night on Friday?

If you are a newcomer, here is a quick brief about this six-week program. We will meet once a week and our younger learners will be introduced to the language through six interesting topics. We will focus on the 30 frequent Chinese words and practice their usages in real-life scenes. Some in-class activities include group practice, story-time, 1-1 dialogue and singing. By the end of the program, you will be able to start a simple conversation, make some short sentences and probably know how to order Chinese take-out yourself in Chinese!

Before each class, we will go over all the words and expressions and after each class, you might be given some “homework” or maybe a worksheet … (unfortunately this is one part of Chinese culture as well) :P

Last but not least, we are learning a new culture, a new way of thinking, not just a new language.

What can you expect from me?

Week 1: Let’s talk about weather
Chinese don’t talk about weather as much as British do, however, it is a pretty good way to start a conversation, especially sometimes when you don’t know what to say next. :P

Week 2: I have a green thumb
Now we know how to say spring in Chinese, so let’s go to the garden and plant a beautiful world!

Week 3: My body
I use my eyes to see, I use my nose to smell, I use my tongue to taste, I use my ears to hear, I use my hands to touch.

Week 4: Happy Birthday!
Why do Chinese eat “unbroken” noodles on their birthdays? We will find out everything about a birthday this week.

Week 5: My morning routine
"I woke up in the morning...." how do we start our day in Chinese?

Week 6: Chinese take-out
Chinese take-out on Fridays are always the best. How about surprising your local take-out place by speaking some Chinese on the phone?

What am I expecting from you?
Open your mind, open your mouth and have fun!

Born and raised in China, I am a mother of a 10-year old boy living in Massachusetts. I have been teaching Mandarin at school (elementary to high school level) for about 7 years and my son was the first student I tutored.

I have learned so much from him. My experiences as a mother and a teacher enable me to deeply understand it truly not easy to learn a foreign language, especially when you can’t find much connection between your family and that country or you can’t find much reason to use that language when everyone else around you are speaking English.

It has to be FUN and culture-intertwined, otherwise you won’t stay long or the language will walk away from you eventually. The beginning is especially very important. Once our young learners find their interest, they will be self-motivated to find their own way of learning. After having tried so many different approaches to get my son and students “hooked” over these years, I have put together my own curriculum for beginning learners of different age groups. The goal of each program (except for the Conversation Club Advanced Level) is to get them interested and potentially be ready to take further step. I am sorry that they are not going to be able to read Chinese newspaper or debate with a Chinese native after taking these programs, but they will be open-minded to a different culture, a new way of speaking and thinking (outside their box).

As the Chinese proverb says, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Now let’s take our first single step.
