6 lessons//6 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Video Editor Scavenger Hunt• Quickly create a simple movie by completing tasks in a video editing program of your choice. This will set you up to know some of the possibilities for your movie.Week 2Lesson 2Screenwriting• Get an introduction to the movie-making process and genres. • Learn about the elements of a screenplay and receive a screenplay template to guide you through writing a story in screenplay format.Week 3Lesson 3Storyboarding• Learn about the different types of shots and their purposes and think about the visual look of your movie. • Create a visual plan for your movie using your script and what you have learned about different shot types.Week 4Lesson 4Production Planning• Plan for everything you need before you start filming. You are welcome start filming your movie after this class but may also want to wait for the next lesson which is on filming.Week 5Lesson 5Filming: Composition and Lighting• Learn how to compose interesting shots that direct your viewers attention to the most important information. • Learn about how we see light, how cameras work, and different types of lighting for a scene.Week 6Lesson 6Video Editing• Sequence your shots to tell your story and add titles and transitions as finishing touches.
Students will develop basic skills with all aspects of the filmmaking process, including writing their own scripts.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a second assistant director and production assistant on a couple of independent films. I wrote and directed my own short film in my studies at a summer film program at USC.

Assessment will occur throughout each session. Informal assessment will occur during activities, with verbal feedback given. There will also be informal check-ins where I assess the status of the class and determine if everyone is ready to move on. I will use these check ins to inform partnerships.提供的成績
Learners will need to either use a notebook or word document to draft their movies. Templates will be provided as Google Docs and Word Docs. But I will also demonstrate how to draft a script in a notebook. Any type of digital camera: smartphone, tablet, even a computer camera will work for some movies, but we will make it work.

Depending on their story ideas, learners may need help with creating props, sets, acting, and filming. Nothing elaborate is necessary but I also try to avoid squashing creativity with practicality. I've have students make movies with their dolls when they couldn't get actors together in time.
