每週 1-2 小時. Reading will be required outside of class time to ensure appropriate discussions during class. Students may be asked to complete something that was not finished during class or to bring some information to the group based on the discussions we have!

Students will have the opportunity to determine their final assessment. Options will include: a final Socratic Seminar discussion, a project, an essay, a debate, a presentation, and more.

From the book cover of Lord of the Flies: "At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashed on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate. This far from civilization they can do anything they want. Anything. But as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far removed from reality as the hope of being rescued..."

Students will work to read and discuss Lord of the Flies by William Golding in Socratic Seminars. The class (readings and activities) will be designed around student interests and traditional academic information. Each week the reading schedule will be announced based on our previous discussions because adjustments can, and need to be made based on how class moves forward! 

The following resources, materials, and activities will be provided for students:
     - Week One: 
          - Multiple Reading Guides and Discussion Guides will be provided
          - Symbolism Journal
          - Collaboration Sheet of Governing Rules for the Island
     - Week Two:
          - Discussion on Topics
          - Comparing Nightmares to Reality
     - Week Three:
          - Collaborative Activity on the Disillusionment of Society and Government
          - Analysis of Character Development to the Story Line
          - Discussion of Instinct vs Humanity
     - Week Four:
          - Analysis of Chapter Titles
          - Debate on the Ending of the Novel, Its Meaning, and Truth about Society
          - Discussion: How do we stay sane in chaos?

Lord of the Flies deals with the question "Are humans inherently prone to evil?". Through the use of violence and the need for survival, William Golding strives to answer this question as the boys work to survive while stranded on a deserted island. The violence is considered dark, tragic, and pessimistic as a couple of deaths do occur during the novel. If these topics are something that you student will struggle with, please talk with me ahead of class so that we can create an appropriate strategy for your student. We will discuss the violence and deaths during class as a necessary part of both our understanding of the novel but also the analysis of the novel. Our goal is to answer our question of evil. If you have questions, please talk with me as soon as possible so we can discuss your concerns!
