This class will study the book Noughts and Crosses written by award winning author Malorie Blackman. Learners will need their own copy. This class will have a reading schedule of about 40 pages per week and then meet once a week for a live class, with discussion and writing activities. For our writing activities we will utilise Nearpod, these will consist of essay style questions, quizzes and interactives that meet our learning goals (see list below). These ELA activites are aimed at grades 8-10 common core standards. Each class will have a themed focus as listed below. Sephy is a Cross - a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a nought - a 'colourless' member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that's as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Cross schools. Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum - a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger. Often described as dystopian fiction, it is in fact an alternate history, postulating a world in which the supercontinent Pangaea never broke up, leading to African nations gaining the evolutionary and geo-political advantage – and ultimately, control – over Europeans. As well as being a compelling tale of love and friendship, this is an outstanding and thought-provoking exploration of the futility of prejudice. A contemporary classic. Week 1 Themes, Context & Setting Week 2 Symbols and Motifs Week 3 Characterisation Week 4 Plot and Narrative Week 5 An unequal society Week 6 Sephy and Callum Week 7 The Power of Words Week 8 The Missed Meeting Week 9 The Kidnap Week 10 Choices No previous knowledge is required to complete this class. 父母的引導和規範
The race-reversal premise of this book effectively illustrates both small and large instances of racism that happen everyday to people of color in real life, effectively inspiring readers to empathize with the have-nots. The book clearly has compassion for underdogs, and displays how power corrupts.
