課堂經歷

In the 19th-century daily life in the United States was different from what we experience today. The way people lived, the houses they lived in, the clothes they wore, the work they did, the food they ate, the entertainment they enjoyed, the transportation they used, the education they received affected every aspect of daily life in the 1800s. Students will compare and contrast the lives of a cross-section of people living in the United States in the 1800s. They will look at how the average European-American family lived compared to the Emigrants who were settling in the Western part of the country. Students will look at how life went from being centered around the home with the entire family working together to produce everything they needed to live to the Industrial Revolution were men and women found jobs outside the home and were able to purchase necessities. Each class meeting we will discuss a different aspect of American life in the 19th-century and how it affected men, women, and children living through it.

Class 1: Home Sweet Home: Life of women and caring for the home and family in the 1800s.

Hi, I'm April Rogers. I'm a proud single mom to an amazing son who is off to college this year. When I'm not cheering him on, I love to spend my hours reading and knitting with my five cats by my side. My academic pursuits brought me from the University of Maryland where I earned my Bachelor's of Arts in History with a minor in Humanities and Women's Studies, to getting my Master of Arts in History at Maryland as well. Over the last twenty years, teaching history has been one of my greatest joys - particularly focusing on Early American history between colonial times and the early 1900s. In the past six years, I've been teaching completely online. In addition, I host a podcast called "The Lives of Women in History". With knowledge and passion for all things Wild West and documenting women's stories, it's been an absolute pleasure to bring empowering stories from female historical figures into the spotlight.
