Over the last few years, several states in the United States have moved towards banning books (again) and limiting discussion about topics related to the LGBTQ+ movement. Some called a recent bill signed by Governor Ron Desantis the "Don't Say Gay" bill (Florida Parental Rights in Education Act). In "Let's say gay" each week, we will not only say "gay", but we will learn about the important historical moments that aren't discussed in many history books that changed (and saved) the lives of many children and adults who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. Many teachers around the globe feel more restricted about how, if and when they can talk about subjects like this, and this class is in direct response to that reality to help parents who are working to inform their children about this subject matter and for the students who have a strong desire to learn more about this topic for whatever reason.

In this weekly, ongoing social club and discussion group, Mr. D will present the details of a specific topic at the beginning of class that is related to either the history of the LGBTQ+ community or to an event that is either currently impacting the community or could have an impact for the future of the community. After the presentation, students will discuss their thoughts and feelings about the issue, and they will be able to ask questions. The purpose of the class is to better inform the students about the history of and currents events related to the LGBTQ+ community at large.

Week 1- 2015 Supreme Court Ruling on Gay Marriage and the years that led to it
Week 2- 2020 Supreme Court Ruling protecting the jobs of the LGBTQ+ community and the years that led to it
Week 3- AIDS and the Ronald Reagan era
Week 4- McCarthy era, Roy Cohn and the Lavender Scare

What will be taught? The American and World History of the LGBTQ+ community will be taught as well as having discussions related to current events that impact the LGBTQ+ community.
What topics will you cover? Fight for gay marriage, jobs protections for LGBTQ+, Lavender Scare, and similar topics
How is your class structured? I will present a topic related to the history or current events and share information about it. Then, I will open it up to discussion as we do a deep dive into the issue. I may send students into their own Zoom rooms to discuss and dig deeper as well.
How will you teach? I will actively present, actively listen and carefully guide students through understanding of the topic of the day.
What's your teaching style? In this setting, I hope to encourage critical thinking and thoughtful, respectful dialogue.
How much will learners get to interact with you and each other (mention specifics like: lecture, games, slides, video clips, discussion)? They will interact with me nearly from the start to the finish of each class.
Any required experience or knowledge learners need? The only requirements are that the student has a passion for this topic either because they are LGBTQ+, an ally of the community, or have a relative or close friend who is a close member, and that they are genuinely interested in doing a deeper dive into this subject area.

父母的引導和規範
Parents should only enroll students who are mature enough to do a deep dive into the issues of the LGBTQ+ community and who have a desire to be a part of learning about the history and current events as it relates to and impacts this specific community. One of the goals of this class is to create a desire within the student to want to go out and learn more and dive deeper.

I was an out gay public school teacher for most of my 30 years teaching choral music and musical theater in some of the most socially conservative regions in the United States. I became aware early on that I could lose my job in North Carolina simply because I was gay. I became passionate about equity for our community when I was 18 years old in 1982, and Ronald Reagan wouldn't talk about HIV or take action related to the disease and millions of gay men died because of the inaction. I created a 501c3 in 2004 called "Boycott for Equality" in response to President George W. Bush's call for a constitutional amendment banning Same Sex Marriage. Throughout my 30 years teaching public school, all of the 300+ students who elected to take my class each year did so in large part because they felt safe there...whether or not they were LGBTQ+ and that is what I hope to do here on Outschool with this class.
